Beat the Heat 2017, July 27-30

Each year the Flagstaff Flyers put together our really grand event for the year, the Beat the Heat Fly-In. While the primary intent of the event is to get together with our fellow flyers from around the state, it is not uncommon to get flyers from as far away as Montana, people visiting the state that like to fly. As well, in years past we might have upward of 50 flyers, including the occasional factory RC pilots, helicopter experts and 1⁄2 scale Cubs.

Our modest seven acre flying site fills with motorhomes and trailers, the occasional tenter and a lot of visitors, as well as our club members themselves, many of whom choose to enjoy the camping experience and stay out there for the weekend. Often, you will see a jam session on Saturday in the area set aside for club members over on the west side of our field, and night flying is something to see and enjoy. Generally the weekend is open flying, with an occasional break for helicopters, demonstrations, or a special event like pylon racing or RC combat, Limbo contests, spot landings, or bomb drops.

This year the event will be held over the long weekend of July 27-30. And of special interest, we almost certainly will set aside at least one pylon race session each day (a round robin of 3 heat races and a main event), as well as plenty of practice time. At our field the pylon racing is restricted to the stock Park Zone electric warbirds series with fixed landing gear. While some exceptions might be made, it’s best to check with the Committee before purchasing a plane with which to compete.
